BIBLE Q&A with Johann #29: Valentine’s Day Blues

By JQuisumbing

Is it okay for Christians to feel lonely during Valentine season?

If it isn’t, then we are all in trouble. [Laughing-just-a little.]  Loneliness is an emotion; a human condition that longs for any connection (objects, animals and/or people). It is neither bad nor good. Even our Lord expressed it at that crucial time of being forsaken (Matt 27:46).

Now, consider when ROMANCE is stirred vigorously with LONELINESS. That is the cocktail that would always be served during the Valentine season and it comes in the effective form of temptation. And like what always happens, especially to young believers (whatever age they are), they take sips and then, more sips. Before you know it, you’re experiencing ‘Valentine’s Day Blues’. You’re trapped!

Now what? Let’s go hypothetical.

A young Christian man is longing for companionship. The girls at his church may be way too ‘Christiany’ for his taste, at least, to his mind. He joins a dating site and sure enough, he‘s deep in the dating game. And evidently, like in all games, people get hurt. Let’s say, our young adventurist, finds someone. She is all that he dreamt about, except she’ll turn up what he did not expect, someone contrary to his Spirit guided heart. He’ll discover that the Lord would want him to go the Lord’s way, but she’ll pull him the other way. And she’ll do it with all her wiles and only to her likings. It’s even worse for the Christian woman in an unequally yoked relationship.1 Of course, I am talking hypothetical, but I have seen these relationships flower then mostly fall apart in real life.

Now, I am sure there are Christians indulging in the Valentine cocktail now, especially with February just around the corner. I believe the Bible provides just the right guideline.

And do not get drunk with wine, in which there is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit… (Ephesians 5:18)

Oh, okay okay… we’re not really talking about getting drunk from alcohol, but the application aspects of this verse, under these circumstances, it is wise to consider it seriously. If I talk more on Ephesians 5, I’m afraid this article will be way too big. So, for those of you in the ‘blues’ or whatever life situation you’re in, pay close heed to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Remember…

He is the Author of Life afterall.

Footnote: [1] 2 Corinthians 6:14 – Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.
