BIBLE Q&A with Johann #24: CHANGE WITH THE TIMES

By JQuisumbing

How do we stay faithful when life feels so different from the generation before us?

George Orwell, a mid-twentieth century English novelist, poet, essayist, journalist, and critic once wrote, “Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it.” He was right. I was fortunate to witness an evolution of world wide cultures due to incredible technological advances. I was once awed from watching black & white shows on a bulky TV set with a 9 inch screen. These days though, most homes have 32 to 72 inch wide flatscreen TVs with over a hundred channels to choose from. Cultures had shifted even more. Practically every man, woman and child has a mobile phone today. So, it is no wonder that people have it in their minds that things must change with the times, including in churches.

So, how do born again believers stay faithful against the world’s pressures to conform? Well, the Apostle Paul gave clear instruction.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2 ESV)

Meanwhile, the Apostle John was a bit more serious.

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. (1 John 2:15-17)

Modern man may be prone to change, but keep this TRUTH forefront in your mind:
