BIBLE Q&A with Johann #21: Anger with God

By JQuisumbing

Is it okay to be angry with God in a season of waiting?

I am assuming that this anger with God stems mostly from unanswered prayers. It is understandable from a human perspective. Once upon a time, I too wondered why a good God would allow bad things to happen to me. And I too should feel angry because when I was just a baby, I was infected with the poliovirus. I had to live my whole life as a cripple. And even today, I am spending the rest of my life in bed as a quadriplegic waiting to die! That is my reality. It does sound bleak, does it not? Some would say that my anger would be justified. But in truth, I disagree and by grace, even in my condition, I am not ruled by such a negative emotion.

So, is it OK for me to be angry? Let me say first, if that anger causes you to run to God in frustration, then by all means go to Him. Jesus even said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matt 11:28 To run to Him is actually wisdom. However, if that anger leads you away from Him, then there can only be one word to describe that person’s decision – FOLLY.

Why do I say folly? By definition, folly means the lack of good sense; foolishness; unwise. So, you may have it in your mind that your anger with the Lord might have any affect on Him. The folly in that concept is like a guy walking up to a churning tornado thinking he’ll get away unscathed. A person like that needs a healthy respect for power greater than his own. Hence the reason why the Bible has this saying: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdomPs 111:10  Jesus reinforced this with a hard truth.

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear HIM who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matt 10:28

Do not let your anger separate you from God.

He who gave His life for you on the cross is not deserving of it.
